October 2009 ADB Officials in Central Asia to Promote Trade Finance ProgramPrivate sector officials from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) today completed a visit to Azerbaijan, Mongolia and Uzbekistan as part of ADB's push to expand its Trade Finance Facilitation Program (TFFP) throughout Central Asia. ADB's $1 billion TFFP provides finance and guarantees through, and in conjunction with, international and developing member country banks to support trade in developing countries. Emerging market companies have long found it difficult to access the credit they need for critical exports and imports. In many countries, this has held back development of new industries as well as overall economic growth. |
July 2009 ADB identifies 216 FTAs in Asia and the Pacific by mid-2009Regional and bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs) continue to proliferate in the Asia and the Pacific region. Compared with more than 54 FTAs at the end of 2000, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) identified 216 bilateral and sub-regional FTAs at various stages as of July 2009. Over 82 FTAs are being implemented, 27 have been signed, and 105 under consideration within the region or with the rest of the world. East Asian economies continue to be the major driver of FTA formation in the region. |
July 2009 ADB Extends $50 Million to Improve Key Road Corridor in Kyrgyz Republic
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is extending $50 million to the Kyrgyz Republic to continue upgrading a major transport corridor that supports the livelihoods of over half a million people and is the country’s main trading link with the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
ADB’s Board of Directors has approved a $28 million equivalent loan and $22 million grant from its concessional Asian Development Fund for a second rehabilitation project on the Bishkek-Torugart Road. |

The increasing number of trade agreements – bilateral, regional, and multilateral – creates major opportunities for developing countries in the Asia and the Pacific to better participate in the international trading system and thus accrue the benefits of globalization. Some countries especially in East Asia have reaped the benefits of globalization adopting outward-oriented development strategies and investing in infrastructure. But others – particularly the least-developed countries (LDCs) and small states – lack the productive capacity and infrastructure needed to take advantage of open markets and to connect with the global economy. These 22 LDCs and small states are spread across all the sub- regions of the Asia and the Pacific. |
