About the Study

Does Asia need to create more institutions to support regional economic cooperation? Is the political environment conducive? What type of governance structure should these institutions follow? Should Asia create a regional bureaucracy with a strong secretariat? Are there lessons Asia could learn from Europe and other regions? What are the benefits for Asian countries to participate in regional and global institutions?

This study, which draws its strength and insights from a team of authors including ADB staff, scholars, and advisers to regional policy makers, takes stock of existing institutions for regional integration in Asia and discusses the need for institutional innovation and reform, moving toward the creation of an Asian economic community.
