ADB Avian Flu and Emerging Diseases

Regional integration and closer economic ties can result in cross-border transmission of avian flu and other infectious diseases. These diseases cause significant economic loss and human and animal deaths, while affecting the livelihood of the rural poor. In response to these challenges, ADB supports innovative approaches in communicable disease control, pandemic preparedness, and other regional public goods.

ADB worked closely with ASEAN, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and World Health Organization to help developing member countries control the spread of avian flu and other diseases (such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome [SARS]) thru procurement of equipment and supplies, training, monitoring and screening, and other public health system capacity needs.
