- ADB Seminar Series on Regional Economic Integration - The Experience with Regional Cooperation Organizations: Lessons for Central Asia (Tuesday, 29 July, 11a.m.-12nn, Auditorium Zone C, Asian Development Bank)24 July 2008Johannes Linn, Special Adviser to the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Forum (CAREC) will present work done with Oksana Pidufala of the Wolfensohn Center for Development at Brookings, on a typology of regional organizations that reviews the functions, performance and experience of selected regional organizations around the globe. Based on this, key lessons are drawn for the Central Asian economies with specific implications for CAREC. - July 2008 Asia Economic Monitor July 2008Aggregate GDP growth in emerging East Asia will moderate to a still solid 7.6% in 2008 and 2009 from the 9.0% peak in 2007, due to the global economic slowdown, high food and energy prices, and continued financial market volatility. The July issue of the Asia Economic Monitor includes a special section on ways to deal with the region's heightened inflation. Read the news release.
- ADB counts 207 FTAs in Asia and the Pacific by mid-2008July 2008The proliferation of regional and bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs) in Asia continues to gather momentum. Compared with more than 50 FTAs at the end of 2000, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) identified 207 bilateral and sub-regional FTAs that were concluded or under consideration within the region or with the rest of the world by mid-2008. Of these, 67 FTAs are being implemented, 32 have been signed, 59 are under negotiation, and 49 are proposed. The FTA toolkit has also been updated and now allows comparison of 67 concluded FTAs.
- New Flagship Study: “Emerging Asian Regionalism – A Partnership for Shared Prosperity”July 2008ADB has released a new study detailing the emergence of a new form of regionalism in Asia that is market-led, dynamic, outward-looking, and supported by intergovernmental cooperation initiatives. The study shows that this is a positive development contributing to growth and stability not only in Asia, but also in the rest of the world. To take full advantage of the increased regional interdependence, Asian economies need to engage in closer dialogue and policy coordination. The study also proposes the creation of new regional institutions such as an Asian Financial Stability Dialogue and an Asian Secretariat for Economic Cooperation. Download the study. Order the book.

- ADB Working Paper Series on Regional Economic Integration No. 17 - Real and Financial Integration in East AsiaJune 2008Soyoung Kim of Korea University and OREI Head Jong-Wha Lee find that real integration in East Asia has been accelerating. They point out that regional financial integration lags behind real integration and that financial markets in the region are more integrated with global markets than with each other. Read more.

While the markets have suffered limited impact, they remain open to further contagion given underlying weaknesses in the region's financial systems. Read more.
- How to Design, Negotiate, and Implement a Free Trade Agreement in Asia May 2008The recent proliferation of free trade agreements (FTAs) in Asia and the Pacific is placing mounting strain on the region’s FTA negotiating capacity and on the knowledge and technical skills of government officials. Complementing the FTA training courses conducted by ADB, this reference book aims to increase the knowledge and capacity of officials who are actively involved in designing, negotiating, and implementing FTAs. The book consists of three parts: (i) Economics of an FTA; (ii) Coverage of an FTA; and (iii) Negotiating, Implementing, and Evaluating FTAs. Read more.
- ADB Working Paper Series on Regional Economic Integration No. 15 - The Impact of Capital Inflows on Emerging Asian Economies: Is Too Much Money Chasing Too Little Good?May 2008Soyoung Kim of Korea University and Doo Yong Yang of Korea Institute for International Economic Policy show that the surges of capital inflows in East Asia have contributed to asset price appreciation, although capital inflow shocks explain a small part of the fluctuations.
